It’s that time of the year again that all high schoolers love. Not only is the weather getting cooler and the pumpkin spice lattes are coming back, but there is also the excitement that homecoming is right around the corner! Everyone cheers in the stands at the homecoming football game on Friday night, and then the next day is when the special night begins and everyone dresses up nice and parties with their friends! Homecoming is one of the first big school events of the year. It started in the 1900s for college alumni students to visit their campus. Nowadays, high schools do these dances to build school spirit, give the school year a big welcome, and offer alumni a chance to visit and say hi to their old teachers and friends. Many students look forward to this big night, and it has been a great tradition for high schools over the years. Being a new student at Dover this year, I’m especially excited, and I am looking forward to going to see what it’s like and having a memorable homecoming with friends!
The Suspense-
The excitement before the big night is the best: first, it’s finding out what the theme is going to be, and then the preparation… This is where it starts to get fun. Guys and girls try to find dates and make hoco proposals hoping the other one says yes. Girls go out dress shopping with their friends and try to find the best outfits. It’s all about dressing up for spirit week, getting ready with friends, taking lots of pictures together, and going out to eat a few hours before the night begins; all these fun moments are what makes a student’s homecoming experience so special and exciting to look forward to.
Is there someone you’re interested in asking out to homecoming? Maybe it’s a hallway crush, boyfriend, or girlfriend? In my opinion, there’s always so much pressure to get a date for homecoming, and if you don’t have one, you’re not “cool enough”. But honestly, it’s okay if you don’t have a date; going with your friends is just as fun and also there is less pressure to ask anyone out.
Different views-
Every student has their own version of how they want the night to play out, and everyone has a different experience of how their night goes. Some may just prefer not to go, but it’s always good to get involved in school events.
What do you think of when you think of homecoming? For me, I think of friends and their dates having fun making memories together and the High School Musical movies with all the singing and dancing and of course…Zac Efron! I interviewed some students from different grades to get their opinions on homecoming…Addy VanDonge, a senior, says, “I think hoco is fun, but it can also be pretty awkward, and I’m excited to hang out with my friends.” Micah Perlman, who is a freshman, states “I’ve never been to a homecoming so I don’t know what to expect, but it should be cool.”
So, whether you have a date or just going with friends, make sure to enjoy yourself and have an amazing time. You’re only in high school for so long, so make it memorable, and don’t be afraid to show off some cool dance moves!
