There have been many exciting changes brought to the ‘23-’24 school year at Dover High School. One of those changes is the addition of Dover’s first A/V club. The club is led by the dream team- Mr. Spies, Mr. Rutter, and Mr. Compton. A/V stands for audio and visuals, which is the main focus of the club. When asked to describe the club, Mr. Spies said this “Mr. Rutter, Mr.Compton and myself are thrilled to be offering A/V Club to DHS students this year! We want to expose our students to all the technology our new school has to offer and give them the opportunity for hands-on learning experiences. Our vision is that A/V Club works closely with other DHS organizations such as the Thespians Club and the Athletic Department. A/V Club students can expect to learn about theatrical lighting, sound recording and mixing, video editing, and more. At its heart, A/V Club is about solving problems and telling stories.” Mr Rutter also added “Interested in a career in audio recording? Ever wonder how the lighting effects at concerts or shows work? Have you ever been curious about who runs all those scoreboards at sporting events? Or do you just really like pressing buttons?? Calling all curious minds! A/V Club is for you!”
“The DHS A/V Club is where you’ll not only learn to understand the technological wonders we have in Dover City Schools but even use some of them!” member Alaina Armstrong says that after only two meetings, the club is already a very welcoming environment. The club brings plenty of new opportunities to students that have not been offered before. Members have the opportunity to run the scoreboard at school sports events, work lighting and sound for the fall play and spring musical, and more upcoming events. Last time the club met, they were taken on a tour of the entire auditorium. Students got to see how the curtains, lights, and controls work and even got to go way up to the catwalk where some of the stage lights are located. It was pretty cool to see the auditorium from that higher-up perspective. A/V club is a very interesting addition to the clubs DHS offers because it’s not like any of the other clubs and it also teaches many skills that will come in handy in the future. It also teaches people to appreciate everyone who helps behind the scenes of plays, musicals, concerts, etc. Learning about the hard work needed to keep the show running will definitely change people’s viewpoint on productions to be more appreciative of the behind-the-scenes workers. If you ever find yourself with no club to attend, come to A/V club! You won’t be disappointed. Follow the club’s Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/dhs.av.club/
