Tim Burton is a fantastic director and producer. Personally, when I think of good Halloween movies I will always think of Tim Burton; all of his movies are classics. Even if someone doesn’t like Halloween movies or the aesthetic of the holiday, they probably like some sort of Tim Burton movie. A lot of his characters, especially the ones in animated movies, have very pale and exaggerated features. All of his movies are good in some way, but really, which is the best movie?
- Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
This movie starts with our main character Jake working at a grocery store until he gets a call that he needs to see his Grandfather. When he finally gets to his Grandfather, he finds his Grandpa in the forest with no eyes. This introduces us to the main “monster” or the bad guy sidekick, a very tall “slender man type” creature that has to eat the eyes of the peculiar children to keep them looking human.
I have always loved this movie, it came out in 2016 and I watched it for the first time in 2019. Ever since then, when people ask me what my favorite movie is I always say this one. Of course, if you read the reviews people have picked it apart to just say bad things about the movie. There isn’t a sequel to the movie but there are 8 books in this series. A lot of people say that the books are better than the movie, I haven’t read the books so I can’t say if that’s true or not but, I will always love this movie.
- Dumbo
Tim Burton’s Dumbo is the basic story that everyone knows. An elephant is born with very large ears, and because of his ears, he is given the nickname Dumbo. At one of his shows, he is taunted by a group of kids, which makes his Mother upset and results in her getting sent to a cage for being violent. After this, they find out that Dumbo can fly with his huge wings, and this also starts all the love and attention for Dumbo.
I love this movie, my mom and I used to watch it all the time after it came out. Dumbo is such a loveable character, it is the same reason people love Bambi. It’s such a cute character with a bad heartbreaking backstory to go behind it. As awful as his nickname is, it’s so fun to say. The movie is also just great because of the story of Jumbo that it is inspired by. Jumbo was a famous circus elephant who tragically died in a boxcar accident. Not to mention, everyone loves a talking animal story, like The Secret Life of Pets, Madagascar, Scooby-Doo, Garfield, and Lady and the Tramp.
- Pee-wee’s Big Adventure
It starts with Pee-wee refusing to sell his most prized possession, his red bicycle. After he finds out it has been stolen, he starts a relentless search for a bike. Thinking that his bike is at the Alamo, he sets off for his adventure. During this adventure, he meets a multitude of people.
My childhood with my Dad has always been watching movies or TV shows together, and we have watched a lot of Pee-Wee Herman. It has a lot of value to me. It’s also just so funny, Paul Reubens is such a good actor, and he’s in so many different things that I don’t think a lot of people know about. He was one of the police officers from Matilda, a trick-or-treater from The Nightmare Before Christmas, in two Batman movies, The Smurfs, two Star Wars movies, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I feel like this made him such a diverse actor.
- The Nightmare Before Christmas
This movie is about Jack Skellington, or “The Pumpkin King.” he has become tired of trying to scare people with the same old routine every year. He walks away from his town until he stumbles upon seven different doors that represent each holiday, and he chooses the Christmas one. He falls into Christmas town, and this town is very very different from his own. He gets inspired by this town, to make a new Halloween-like Christmas. Jack makes his Santa suit, makes his dog Zero into his Rudolph, and makes the citizens of Halloweentown make presents for the little kids around the world.
I love this movie so much. My sister and I have matching Jack Skellington bags and slippers we got for Christmas. I love the story of Sally and Jack; the only reason it’s kind of low on the list is because of how much I love the other movies more than this one. It’s so popular, which is a good thing, but with popularity, comes bad things. I love this movie, it’s a really good movie. I love the music and the fact that Jack learns to love his passions again.
- Corpse Bride
Corpse Bride starts with Victor’s family and Victoria’s family getting ready to meet for them to talk about Victor and Victoria’s arranged marriage. Victor is nervous about marrying Victoria so he goes out into the woods to practice how he’s going to propose until he puts the ring on a wooden branch. Once he puts the ring in the branch he is whisked away to the underworld to meet his “Corpse Bride.” While he is in the underworld, he is met with many things that he has never seen before including a man that could split in two right in front of him. He tries to come back to his home by telling his corpse bride, Emily, that she should meet his family, so she goes to the wise man and they devise a spell that will allow them to return to the land of the living. They come back, he runs away to see Victoria with Emily following him. Once Emily catches up to Victor she takes him back to the underworld. Eventually, Victor gets Emily to let them go back to the land of the living again, and he finally gets to marry Victoria.
This movie is so good, I love the music. Any Tim Burton movie just has the best music. I really like the difference between the underworld; all the colors and such big personalities that the world has compared to the land of the living. Really the only thing that I don’t like is the fact no one listens to Victoria when she expresses what she thinks about marriage and how marriage should be with people who actually love each other and not just because their parents think that they should get married.
