Do you prefer a traditional Christmas or a themed Christmas? There is a lot of controversy between having traditional ornaments you’ve collected over the years and colored lights vs. themed ornaments placed perfectly on the tree with white lights.
Traditionally decorated trees are not everyone’s cup of tea. People like the aesthetic of a “perfect” tree. I am one of those people. To me, a Christmas tree that is decorated evenly with similar ornaments and an even amount of ornaments just looks pleasing to the eye. The only thing I do not do is stray from Christmas-colored things. I tend to have a theme every year, but it always consists of reds, greens, gold, white, and silver, or the main colors of traditional Christmas decorations. I don’t like it when people use their themed color as, say, pink. I feel like that’s when you draw the line and you’re straying away from the Christmas spirit. Although I do believe that like anything else, a Christmas tree can be a way that someone expresses themselves and their creativity. Some people don’t like the same colors every year which is understandable.
If you ask someone who is a diehard traditional Christmas person, they will say that having a themed tree and/or themed decorations takes away from the Christmas spirit. In many senses, I agree. Traditional Christmas is what we think of 40-50 years ago, maybe even longer. We think of having kids place any ornament of any shape and color on a real tree with colored lights placed in any way you want. Messy almost, but it’s all about the Christmas spirit.
I feel like there are people who are diehard traditional decorators, diehard-themed decorators, and people in the middle. Even though I am a modern or themed kind of decorator, I’d say I lean more towards the middle. I still like traditional styled trees where it looks like chaos but it doesn’t matter because it’s Christmas. Some people who ONLY do themed decorating take it too seriously as if it should be perfect. Whether it be traditional or themed, I believe anyone should be able to express themselves in whatever way they choose. One may look better than the other, but Christmas is about happiness. If being laid back and not caring is your vibe, that is OKAY. Whatever makes you happy around the Christmas season is all that matters.
