It was the morning of January 8th, everyone at the University of Michigan was saying, “Go Blue” or “Go Wolverines,” whereas at the University of Washington, the students were saying, “Go Huskies, We got this!” Later that day, the teams went head-to-head for the NCAA football championship trophy. The quarterbacks saw who can throw the most completed passes and passing yards. The kickers saw, if it came down to it, who would make that one field goal that would get the team the big win.
With Washinton winning the coin flip, they chose to receive the ball in the second quarter giving Michigan the chance to strike first, and they did just that. Only about five minutes into the game, McCarthy handed the ball to number seven, Donavan Edwards, to get a 41-yard rushing touchdown. Then, Grady Gross of Washington kicked one field goal to get them 3 points. After that field goal, McCarthy again passed it to Edwards, getting yet again 7 more points. The first quarter would consist of JJ McCarthy throwing two touchdown passes, and Grady Gross of Washington kicking one field goal to make the score 14 to 3 in Michigan’s favor.
In the second quarter, right off the bat Michigan struck again scoring a field goal quickly making the score 17 to 3. No points were scored almost that entire quarter until Washington gave a long pass making it into the red zone. They ended up scoring a touchdown with a good kick and made the score 17 to 10 still with Michigan winning.
In the third quarter, around three minutes into the second half. Michigan scored another field goal gaining three more points. Three minutes later, Washington also went for a field goal, “It’s Good!” said the commentators. They added three points making the score 20 to 13 and that’ll begin the fourth quarter. Halfway through the fourth, Michigan scored another touchdown with a good field goal making the score 27 to 13. Then, not even five minutes later, Michigan does the same thing adding seven more points, giving Washington no hope of winning. With only one minute left, Jim Harbaugh started cheering and got drenched with Gatorade and many people congratulated him. Before that day, Jim avoided every Gatorade dump of the year. At the end of the game, Michigan kneels the ball letting the clock run down to 0:00 giving them their first championship win of the century.
