It’s February now, which means Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, meaning love is in the air. Everyone is spending time with their significant other and doing fun Valentine’s traditions. One of my favorite things to do during this month of love is to watch romance movies. I love watching movies any time of the year, but there’s something about watching a good romance that will make you laugh and cry during Valentine’s Day. My favored elements of romance and romantic comedies are when the main characters finally kiss for the first time and when it seems like it won’t work out after all. Oh, and the always satisfying and heartfelt endings—I love them all. Choosing the best rom-coms to watch can be challenging because there are so many to choose from. I listed my top ten romantic films that I could watch repeatedly. Hopefully, this will help you choose a good romance to watch the next time you sit down to watch a movie.
10- My Big Fat Greek Wedding
My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a great movie if you want a good laugh, it has a mix of everything. Romance! Comedy! Culture shock! And about falling in love when you least expect it. To keep the Greek heritage, Greeks are only allowed to marry other Greeks. Toula is still unmarried at 30 years old and still works for her family restaurant. After taking another job, she falls in love with a tall handsome guy, Ian, who is not Greek! Throughout the movie, she tries to win her family’s approval of him. All the characters have a fun unique personality that makes the movie. I watch this movie over and over for its hilarious storyline and the romance between Ian and Toula. It teaches that family is important, and it’s okay to be with the person you love, regardless of culture and family background. For the romance level, I rate this a 6/10.
9- Fools Rush In
Was it fate, or just a coincidence? Fools Rush In offers such a sweet love story about opposites attracting and being in the right place and at the right time when meeting people. What was supposed to be a one-night stand became two people falling in love with each other. Isabel and Alex are from two completely different backgrounds and learn how to work with each other and build a life together.. Alex must choose between his life in New York and his future with Isabel. It shows how Isabel and Alex are against long-standing cultural opposition and even their expectations and by fate, drawn to spend the rest of their lives together. This movie had an amazing ending. I give it an 8/10 for romance.
8- The Princess Bride
This movie is a classic fairy tale and one of my favorites to watch growing up. It’s packed with lots of action, romance, and so many funny quotable lines! It’s a great story about never giving up on love. Westley and Princess Buttercup, the two major characters, were separated from one another for a long time. After Westley saves her, they eventually reunite, but not before overcoming the dangers of the mythical kingdom. This movie is entertaining to watch. The love the characters have for each other is so sweet and the storytelling is spot on. I rate this movie a 7/10 for romance. Shirly says, “It’s a hilarious movie, and I love how the guy puts in effort.”
7- Return To Me
This movie will make you cry both happy and sad tears. Bob, our main character’s wife, dies in a car accident and is heartbroken. Years later, he decides to try dating again, and he meets Grace, a recovered heart transplant patient with intimacy problems of her own. When Bob discovers Grace’s heart came from his organ donor wife, an unusual romance blossoms between the two. It’s a sweet romance and teaches you a lot about the emotional challenges of loss moving forward and embracing life. I give this movie’s romantic rating an 8/10.
6- While You Were Sleeping
While You Were Sleeping is one of my favorite feel-good romance movies. It’s a story about “love at a second glance.” Lucy gets mistaken for being Peter’s fiancee after saving him from almost getting run over by a train. While Peter is in a coma from the accident, things get more complicated and Lucky starts to fall in love with Peter’s brother Jack. During the movie, we see the two characters flirt with each other and see their bond grow stronger. I’ve seen this movie countless times, and it never gets old! This movie gets an 8.5/10 for romance.
5- How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
This movie is a classic! Andie is a magazine writer and is writing a new article about writing about how to get a man to leave you in 10 days. Andie goes off to find a man she can use for the experiment. Ben Berry, who is so confident in his romantic skills, thinks he can make any woman fall in love with him in 10 days. When Andie and Ben meet, their plans backfire. After lots of funny scenes and embarrassing moments, the two realize it’s more than a bet and find out they are in love with each other. This movie has a sweet ending and such a funny storyline! This sweet rom-com gets a 7/10.
4- Ten Things I Hate About You
Ten Things I Hate About You is one of the best high school romantic films, in my opinion. It’s the classic story of “enemies to lovers”, and being true to yourself. There are memorable scenes in the movie that everyone loves and will make you laugh. Bad boy Patrick gets paid to try to date antisocial Kat, so her sister is allowed to date. The two end up falling in love, and it’s no longer a bet. This movie is a top pick for romance rom coms, I give it a 9/10. Dillon Ingram says “I like this movie because it’s cute how they didn’t like each other at first, then fall in love.”
3- Sleepless in Seatle
This is a sweet story about long-distance relationships and a kid playing matchmaker, trying to find his Dad a wife. His dad talks on the radio about his life and Annie, a reporter who lives far away, hears Sam speak and falls for him, even though she is engaged. Unsure where it will lead, she writes Sam a letter asking him to meet her at the Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day. This is a perfect movie to watch for the Valentine’s season, and it will make you cry 10/10.
2- Pride and Prejudice
Omg! I love this movie! Me and my mom watch this together all the time, so it is so special to me. This is such a sweet romance and a charming love story. Set in 1813, Elizabeth Bennet lives with her mother, father, and sisters. As the oldest, she is faced with lots of pressure from her parents to marry. Sparks fly when she is introduced to the handsome and upper-class Mr. Darcy. Although there is obvious chemistry between the two, Darcy’s reserved nature threatens their relationship, but there is an amazing ending that will leave you satisfied 10/10.
1- The Notebook
Last but not least, The Notebook. It is a story about enduring love that lasts forever. It tells the story of two people who met while they were younger and then were separated because of their social classes. Despite their bickering and all the hindrances to their relationship, they found themselves returning to each other. I love the ending of this movie and how they grow old together. 10/10!
