The Dover boys golf team held the Dover Invitational at Oak Shadows in New Philadelphia on Saturday, August 31st. A total of seventeen teams participated in the tournament. Devon McGlothlin led the Crimson Team to finish seventh place by shooting an eighty-one. The scorers for Dover were Devon McGlothin, Ryan Yoder, Gage Stingel, Mason Grewell, and Austin Levengood.
I asked senior Ryan Yoder to tell me about his best hole of the day, and he replied, “My favorite was hole number twelve. I made par on the longest par three at two hundred twenty-five yards. I hit the green with a five iron and two-putted on a tough green.” I also asked him for his opinion on how he thinks he played. He responded, “I did not play to my standards; I had mostly good holes but had some blow-up holes that cost me in the end”.
I then questioned senior Devon McGlothin about how he thought he played. He replied, “I had a rough day, but I finished strong with a birdie on the eighteenth hole, which was a par five.”
The weather at Oak Shadows Golf Course was humid and muggy. After most golfers teed off, they were greeted with light rain. With the obvious heat, the rain felt good in the moment, but after it slowed down you could feel how heavy the air was with the humidity. When approaching the eighth hole, boys varsity golf coach Mr. O’Donnell informed the players of lightning nearby. The golfers had to take a short five to ten-minute break and later resumed to finish the rest of the rigorous course. Mr. O’Donnell had this to say about the Dover boy’s performance: “Overall the boys played pretty well on a tough day. They had a total of about an hour of delays due to the weather. The scoring was tough for everybody. Due to the difficulty of the course, it had an overall effect on all the teams that participated in the invitational”.
In an overview, the Dover boys golf team placed seventh out of seventeen teams. The players had a tough course along with engaging against solid teams and players. In the end, they had a decent run, and I got to enjoy taking pictures and getting to watch my first golf tournament.
