The Top Billboard is a way to display a certain number of songs based on their popularity. One of the oldest dates is back on August 4, 1958, the “Hot 100” premiered one of the greatest hits, “Poor little fool” by Ricky Nelson. This song ended up being the first song to reach top one on the Billboard charts. Over time this has updated weekly as music has changed overtime. Here is the updated list for August of 2024.
#1: “A Bar Song(Tipsy)” is a single written by the artist Shaboozey. For many of us, hearing the artist has become common due to the popularity of this song. Released on April 12th, the song quickly increased in streams, reaching the top charts. It has been comfortably sitting at the top position for seven weeks straight. A little over a month after releasing his single, on May, 31st, Shaboozey released the respective album, Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going. This album has not received as much love as his single yet, but it still has about ten to twenty million streams on Spotify.
#2: In the number two spot is “I Had Some Help” by Post Malone featuring Morgan Wallen. This song is on the radio constantly, just like Shaboozey’s hit song. It was released on May 10th as a single and later included in the album, F-1 Trillion on August 15th. This single has been on the top billboard charts for fifteen weeks.
#3: The third song in the top ten is a recently released single titled, “Die With A Smile” written by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. This song has struck many hearts and has quickly risen to its position. It was released on August 16th and has been an amazing collaboration that many people were not expecting, but were happy to see.
#4: “They not like us, they not like us” in the fourth spot, “Not Like Us” written by Kendrick Lamar, was a diss track against Drake, another popular songwriter. Released on May 4th as a single, Lamar’s song quickly rose to the top of the charts. However, this has been bumped down one spot due to the rise of the number three spot, “Die With A Smile.”
#5: Spotify’s number one artist Billie Eilish has been growing in popularity due to her brother’s production and her vocal range. The song “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” was streamed over and over by millions of people and used as a background song on platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. It was released on May 17th with the rest of the album HIT ME HARD AND SOFT. Many of Eilish’s fans were happy for her to expand her audience. She has been making music since she was thirteen years old. She is now twenty-two years old, and she was born in December of 2001. She is the youngest artist ever to receive two Oscars.
#6 Chappell Roan is a name that was suddenly known out of nowhere. “Good Luck, Babe!” was released as a single on April 5th and became known for its catchy chorus and unique bridge. Chappell Roan has a few other hit songs that she made in September of 2023. Many people would say this song deserves to be as popular as it is.
#7 Released on April 12th, “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter was on repeat constantly and many may say it is not enjoyable to listen to anymore. This song was released as a single to help promote her newest album Short n’ Sweet which was released on August 23rd. The chorus may or may not be confusing, but it is easy to learn.
#8 Tommy Richman released “Million Dollar Baby” on April 26th and it is known for its danceable beat. It was used constantly on TikTok and even had its own dance. This song was also very popular in other countries, reaching number one on the Billboard charts in Australia, Iceland, and New Zealand. The song is about wanting to make it into the music industry and that Richman knows he is worth a million dollars.
#9 For her second song on this Billboard Top Ten list, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please, Please, Please” broke the music industry with its rise in performance. This song is also a single, just like her previously mentioned song, “Espresso.” This song was released on June 6th and skyrocketed to the upper ranks of the Billboard charts.
#10 Last but not least, Teddy Swims has experienced a rise this summer with the popularity of his song, “Lose Control.” It was originally released in June of 2023 but made a comeback this summer. However, this song has been slowly dropping in popularity as summer ends.
Now that I’ve explained a little about each song, it’s time to get an opinion from another DHS student.
I asked, Haley, a junior at DHS, what she thought about the top ten. She is in band and loves hanging out with friends and listening to music. She had this to say about the list: “I think the list is good, I’d rate it like an 8/10 just because I don’t know the first three songs by their name. I’d maybe rate Billie’s song higher but that’s probably a personal preference. Although the list is good, I think some songs should be higher up on the list. For example, with ‘Birds of a Feather’ or ‘Not Like Us.’”
My Opinion: I am thrilled with this list however, I don’t think that Shaboozey’s song, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” should still be at the number one spot. I find it annoying when I hear that song and would like a better variety of music. I recently went on a trip to visit some friends out of state, and the radio was on most of the time while we hung out. “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” “Espresso,” and “Good Luck, Babe!” were on repeat all the time, and I feel the variety of music this summer was a little bland. I enjoyed listening to these, however, after hearing them on repeat about fourteen times in four hours, it was not enjoyable to listen to the radio.
