Whether Democrat, Republican, liberal, or conservative, one can acknowledge that this presidential election is one of the most significant twists of the century. Numerous ongoing political issues augment concerns about our future president. Existing Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are in an incredibly tight race.
While many are undecided on whether Trump or Harris would be a better presidential candidate, let us put it into different terms. While fairly unexplored in the political game, Harris is also a breath of fresh air to many people in the United States. While Trump has been well introduced to the view of politics, he also has older perspectives and has not moved with the new times and technology of the world. He is better equipped to handle surprises in American politics. Yet, Harris still has the impetus of the election due to one simple fact: she has a better connection with the common people. Both presidential candidates communicate well with the public, but Trump can get stuck in the past with old policies. On the other hand, Harris is ready to look to the future of America. Not to mention that Harris has not been in legal or federal trouble while Trump is still awaiting sentencing on 34 convicted felonies.
Many Democrats, undecided persons, and other countries are questioning Trump’s overall morals as Harris takes the election. Many European countries attest that they are extremely concerned about Trump gaining another term. Even our strongest political allies have concerns about Trump’s possible election. According to Pew Research, “A median of 68% across the nations polled say they disapprove of the U.S. increasing tariffs on imported goods; a median of 66% oppose the Trump administration’s withdrawal from international climate agreements; and 60% disapprove of Trump’s proposal to build a wall on the border with Mexico”(www.pewresearch.org). This is legitimate proof that by other countries’ standards, Trump and his campaign are unfavorable. While most other countries agree that Harris is a better choice to stop the war in Ukraine, Palestine, and Israel on top of fixing many political alliances and sticking to NATO, American citizens and the common people can not seem to decide on a definite answer.
Both presidential candidates speak out against a current and ongoing issue in America: gun violence. During the early morning of Wednesday, September 4th, the 45th documented school shooting in 2024 took place in Apalachee High School, Georgia. Harris decided that during her presidential campaign speech today, she would speak out about the tragic incident and presented the claim,”…we’ve got to end the epidemic of gun violence in our country once and for all” (thehill.com). Most Democrats are against guns and gun ownership in the United States as it leads to incidents like this. As gun violence becomes the leading cause of death for children in the United States, Republicans seemingly repeatedly arrive at the Second Amendment. For instance, Donald Trump had this to say about the violent and cruel act of September 4th, “Our hearts are with the victims and loved ones of those affected by the tragic event in Winder, GA. These cherished children were taken from us far too soon by a sick and deranged monster”(www.newsweek.com). And yet, Trump is taking little to no precautions when it comes to gun violence in the US. Even after an assassination attempt, Trump declares that he will stick to the right to bear arms and plans only to increase the importance of background checks and the legal age to purchase a firearm.
At this point in the election, it is unclear who is in the lead or who has a definite win. Whichever candidate, there are plenty of pros and cons. Trump, the Republican candidate, makes the world stand on its toes and Harris, the Democratic candidate, has the American people unsure. Credits to both candidates and best of luck!
