Despite winning three World Series the Chicago White Sox have had the worst regular season record going 41 – 121. The 41 is the amount of wins they have and the 121 is the amount of losses they have. That’s the worst baseball record in over 60 years beating the 1962 New York Mets with a record of 40 – 120 – 1. Along with having played the worst games this year, they have fired a bench, base, and hitting coach. However, those coaches had nothing to do with the fact they played the worst defense anyone has seen this season as the team could not catch routine fly balls hit to the outfield, field ground balls hit to the infield, or have any correlation anywhere.
One point of strength for the White Sox was their pitching. Garrett Crochet, the starting pitcher for the 2024 season, was doing better than most of the pitchers in the league, with around a 3.60 ERA. According to MLB.com, ERA is “Earned run average represents the number of earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings.” Crochet also has 201 strikeouts and 146 innings pitched. That’s around 16 full games. Every game the White Sox have played Crochet has been the starting pitcher. Along with their starting pitchers, the closing pitchers did just as well. The closing pitcher for the White Sox is Justin Anderson. Justin has 57 games pitched, 51 innings pitched, 57 strikeouts, 2910 career pitches, and has only given up 5 home runs this season with the White Sox.
The second area of weakness is their fielding. They have continuously dropped routine fly balls in the outfield and missed easy ground balls hit to their infield. They also misthrew easy throws from shortstop to first base. These things are crucial to winning games not only in the MLB but also in high school games. If you can not field the ball then you will not be able to get the runners out and they will keep on scoring until they hit the mercy rule limit. Youtuber Zach Hample had this to say about the Chicago White Sox, “First of all, the Chicago White Sox are HISTORICALLY bad this season.” Zach is a trusted baseball YouTuber with over 650,000 subscribers. He goes to almost every baseball game of all of the MLB seasons and has gotten at least one ball every game. He has a total of 12,750 balls that he has collected over time.
The White Sox have had one of the worst seasons overall. The firing of their coaches probably made players miss plays high schoolers could make, and their fan base drop. Their most recent game had only 100 fans throughout the whole stadium. While having that win-to-loss ratio, they surprisingly managed to break a couple of records on their way. First is the most losses during a regular season. The second is the worst baseball team in over a century. Those are not good records to break, but at least they will hold them for a very long time if not forever. To wrap this up, no one has had a worse record since 1899 when the Cleveland Spiders went 20 – 134.
