Fall Favorites: Over the Garden Wall

Over the Garden Wall is a Disney mini-series that came out in 2014 and was created by Patrick McHale. For many people, it has become a fall must-watch due to its spooky feeling and general oddness. Following two kids named Wilt and Greg, the show explores a forest setting known as The Unknown and the odd residents of said forest. Over the Garden Wall has been a very niche show from the beginning due to its lack of marketability for Disney, but is it a good addition to your fall watch list? Here are some reasons why it may be a show you need to watch each year.

  1. Over the Garden Wall engages your brain

Over the Garden Wall often challenges you to think about what is going on because a lot of details that are needed to explain the story are hidden throughout the show, with some even being on the intro card before the show even starts . A lot of plot aspects and lore are hidden in small details that are left for you to dissect, making the show hard to follow if your attention is not on the show at the time. It requires you to make your own theories as to what’s going on to fill in gaps it leaves throughout the story.  This is not a show to put on in the background while doing laundry.

  1. It has minor horror aspects that make it scary but digestible.

Over the Garden Wall has a small amount of horror elements that can be disturbing or just generally uncomfortable, but these elements are minor enough that people who have a hard time with horror scenes in movies can watch it without getting a full scare, making it a good watch for anyone who likes the spooky feeling of fall without it being too scary. It is not boring in that aspect either. The disturbing parts of the series do often feel disturbing enough to digest but something that will be stuck in your head for a while.

  1. It matches the vibes of fall perfectly.

This series reflects the feel of fall very well with its old-timey ambience and general

oddity that comes with the season. It often combines the comforting feeling of cozying up at

home after the summer months with the scary feeling that comes around during Halloween. It mixes comfort and horror really well which can make it a very versatile show.

  1. Over the Garden Wall is short

Each episode is around 11 minutes long with 10 episodes within the series, making it a show you can watch within 2 hours. This runtime makes it easy to watch in a short amount of time, giving you more time to watch any other fall movie or series you planned on watching. The episode length also makes it convenient for those who do not like sitting through long episodes to finish the show.

  1. Over the Garden Wall is very eye-catching

Most of the show is very alluring due to its strangeness. From a frog playing piano to a school full of animal children, its weirdness keeps you asking about what is really going on within The Unknown to make it so eccentric. It leaves you wondering how two kids got themselves stuck somewhere so bizarre. Anytime you take your eyes off the show, I guarantee that something peculiar will happen to steal your attention right back.

Overall, Over the Garden Wall has been a memorable show to everyone who has watched it since its release, going on to watch it each year come Halloween. By watching it, you can join many people who have hopped on the tradition of watching it each year to remember the unknown and what lurks inside it. It takes everything about the autumn season and combines it to make a wonderful series that I hope will be remembered for years to come.
