How the Grinch Stole the Show

Let’s talk about Grinch movies. Everyone has to have a favorite; for what reason, though? Some people prefer famous films from 2000, while others like animated ones from 2018. There are pros and cons to both. I believe that each movie is appropriate for different age ranges. I find the animated one better for little kids to watch. I think it is less scary in a sense. It has a happier theme to it meanwhile, the original Grinch tends to be more creepy and ominous. I feel that the movie aired in 2000 is better suited for pre-teens to adults. Now let’s go into some pros and cons of each.

In the 2018 film, the Grinch tends to be kinder and sweeter than other versions. He doesn’t have the sense of evil like in the other films. In the newest film, it seems as if the Grinch is just misunderstood. On the contrary, however, some say that Benedict Cumberbatch’s voice tends to be naturally grumpy. Watchers also say that John Legend’s voice is “too normal” for the narration.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the bright, colorful nature of the movie. However, the narration doesn’t seem to match the anti-consumerist message that the original movie gives off. The message the movie gives is mainly focused on kindness and love which people seem to mostly enjoy. Some do think that it is excessive but is still tolerable.

Overall watchers do seem to enjoy this film. It is believed that it is targeted towards children or a younger audience based on the storyline and message of the overall movie.

Let’s talk about some of the controversy that has to go with the Jim Carrey Grinch movie. While most people love this movie, when it comes to children, however, some find it scary. The Grinch in this movie tends to be more wicked in a sense. Some have said that the director, Ron Howard, was more bitter than the Grinch ever was. Some think this movie was about commercialism and selfishness rather than kindness and forgiveness, which I see in this movie. Yes, it had amazing artistry and acting, but the story was not properly told. Especially compared to the original 1966 Grinch. It seems as if the Grinch never really learned how to be forgiving, which is the main idea of this movie. Even though Mr Carrey did an excellent job acting, the directing was not on par.

Both movies have shown pros and cons. Even though both movies are drastically different in style and seem to be targeted to separate age groups, it is up to you which is your favorite. I approve of both- however, it depends on my day which one I will watch. Even if you are all for the Grinch or don’t like the Grinch at all, maybe tonight, snuggle up with some hot cocoa and a good Christmas movie. Have a happy holiday and a wonderful Christmas break.
