Every family has a cherished family tradition around the holidays. These traditions are important in their ways and mean a lot to people. So the big question is, what are some traditions your family has? What traditions do people in your life use to celebrate the Christmas season? For that, I plan on interviewing five students to share their traditions with us around Dover High School.
Our first interview was with Zoe McClelland. One of the cherished traditions that she loves is baking all types of cookies at her grandma’s house. Zoe said about her family tradition, “I always like to go to my grandma’s house, and I always make cookies.” I asked Zoe what type of cookies her family makes. She said, “We make a lot, like cut-out cookies, and then we make these like peanut butter blossom cookies. I make my dad’s favorite orange cookies”. Her tradition sounds like a fun one and like something she will never forget.
Our next interview is with Jenna Festi. One of her family traditions her family has for Christmas is very unique. They hide a pickle in their Christmas tree. Jenna told me, “Every year on Christmas day, we have a pickle hidden inside the Christmas tree, and whoever finds the pickle gets to open the first present.”. Jenna said that she had only found the pickle once. But no matter, that tradition is cool.
One of my friends wanted to be interviewed, Joscelyne Orr. One of her traditions that she is starting this year is going to her family’s houses. Joscelyne stated, “Starting this year, we are going to my family’s houses on Christmas, and we normally have a party on Christmas Eve.”. Joscelyne said that she is excited to start this tradition and that it’s something different.
Vigo Varns got a chance to tell me about his family tradition with his family. He said that he does the saran wrap game for his grandparents. Vigo told me this, “Every year for Christmas for my grandma and grandpa, we do a saran wrap ball. Where we get lots of lottery tickets, candy, and gift cards…We wrap it up.”. He said that they get pretty tired, and it’s funny every year.
And last but not least, I interviewed Kiley VanSickle. She has a mixed family so she travels between her mom’s and her dad’s. She said, “…I will have two Christmas dinners with my family. And at my mom’s, we will have some sort of something with ham. And then at my dad’s, we will have something like pork chops and mashed potatoes.” I asked Kiley which dinner she liked more, and she said it was her mom’s meal.
Christmas traditions are important, and they show the uniqueness of each family. I thank these individuals for sharing some of their Christmas spirit with us. All families have different ways of celebrating, and they all are important. Without Christmas traditions, there would be no remembrance of past Christmas’. So have a Merry Christmas! And I will see you reading the next article.
