I remember when Universal first announced that they were making Wicked into a movie musical adaptation. Most theater fanatics went crazy, while everyone else freaked out because Ariana Grande was playing Glinda. After the movie came out, all I heard on my For You Page on TikTok were songs from the film. People were dancing, singing, and reacting to them. Everyone had different opinions about which song they liked the best, but there were three that seemed to come out on top.
In third place for the Best Song From Wicked is…….. “Popular” sung by Glinda. This is a fun, upbeat song that is enjoyable to sing to. Ariana Grande brings great energy throughout the music which makes it so loveable. In the song, Glinda is trying to help make her roommate Elphaba popular by giving her a makeover. Both characters sing a lot throughout the movie but this song provides the audience with a real insight into Glinda’s personality.
In second place for the Best Song From Wicked is……… “Dancing Through Life” sung by Fiyero. The song gives the message that you should stop taking everything seriously and stop thinking so much about what you are doing. Instead, you should just live in the moment. This captures Fiyero’s personality as a character. Fiyero is a carefree guy who avoids responsibility and tries to get everyone else to follow his mindset. The choreography in this song is what makes it likable but when it is mixed with the vocal talents of Jonathan Bailey it becomes a fan favorite.
In first place for the Best Song From Wicked is……… “Defying Gravity” sung by Elphaba. This song comes at the very end of Act One of the musical which is the end of the movie. Throughout the movie, Elphaba has been struggling to fit in and after she finds out how truly evil the Wizard is, she finally decides she just doesn’t belong with everyone else in Oz. The song is filled with emotion as Elphaba sings about how she needs to trust herself and move on. The people in Oz told her she couldn’t be as powerful as the wizard. She realizes that she can be more powerful than the wizard so she knows it is best to leave. The song ends with a powerful riff that conveys Elphaba’s emotions to the audience and can even make someone tear up.
Now as a bonus, we are adding in the Worst Song From Wicked. This award goes to “Sentimental Man.” This is sung by the Wizard. He sings about how he has always longed to be a father and how he wants to be a father figure to Elphaba. The Wizard is a manipulative character and just wants to use Elphaba’s power for his gain. He mentions that everyone deserves a chance to fly and we think he is talking about Elphaba, but he is referring to himself and how he is going to fly in life after he uses Elphaba.
Overall, Wicked was a very good movie musical filled with a lot of fun songs and great actors that truly made the story come to life. I’m sure everyone will be excited to return to Oz later this year for part two of the movie
