Luigi Mangione has been officially charged with murder and domestic terrorism for the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson.
On December 9th, 2024, Mangione was arrested in connection to the murder of the CEO. He was spotted at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania after a manhunt for Luigi, the person of interest, was started. He was extradited back to New York to face federal charges for the murder. Feared by the elite for what his case represents, many say Luigi Mangione is a symbol of hope for the lower and middle class.
First of all, let’s look into the background of suspect Luigi Mangione…
Luigi Mangione is a 26-year-old man who grew up in a life of power. He was valedictorian of a prestigious all-boys school in Baltimore, Maryland. Afterwards, he went to the University of Pennsylvania where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in engineering. He even went above and beyond by attending a pre-college tech program at Stanford University. With all of this education, it’s easy to say that Mangione is a smart person!
Along with his astounding education, Mangione’s home life was also privileged. His family, very wealthy from owning a country club and health service, had vacation homes around the world and took vacations frequently. Mangione’s social media accounts would say the same, showing his journeys and pictures of himself at beaches. Many would say that Luigi Mangione was destined for greatness because of his family’s status. Unfortunately, though, he left that life of privilege ever since December 4th, the day of the murder.
The Number 286

While the number may look harmless, many see a lot of connections to the case and the number. First of all, when you open Mangione’s profile on Twitter/X, his banner features a picture of himself, an x-ray photo of his back injury, and the Pokemon character Breloom. Not many can see the relevance of the character’s addition, but it makes sense when it’s revealed that the character number is 286. He also posted 286 times on the social media website. While this isn’t much to go off of, it goes deeper. 286 is a code used by healthcare professionals when a company rejects a person’s claim. The McDonald’s that Mangione was arrested in was 286 miles away from where the crime took place.
A user on TikTok also pointed out that in Proverbs 28:6, it says “Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.” Although this is all a conspiracy theory, many people have dubbed this number to belong to him.
Inspiration by the Masses
Mugshot of the accused Briana Boston. Since the Luigi Mangione case has gained so much traction, others have become inspired by his actions, following in his footsteps. A few weeks after the shooting, a Florida woman was arrested for saying the words “Delay, Deny, Depose” on a phone call with her health insurance company, Blue Cross. The woman, identified as Briana Boston, was quickly arrested. It seems that police officers are quick to stop people who threaten CEOs.
Other than the inspiration felt from the people in the middle-class, many companies have changed as well. Some businesses have joked about the situation post-Luigi Mangione, but other businesses have expressed fear. The flooding of online support has also welcomed torrents of hate towards the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, PacifiCare. The parent company has so far defended their employees and are currently facing negative reviews from people online.
Along with the online hatred for companies, others have donned a new attire relating to the recent arrest. Many websites have sported a new array of clothing with words of support to Luigi Mangione. Some post his face on a shirt and others have written the words “Deny, Defend, Depose” in addition to a picture of a cartoon character, Luigi from Super Mario Brothers.
Overall, the case is still growing, so all said is current word. There is more that could come out, so we should all just wait and see…
