For most teenagers or people in general, music is a mood booster. Whether you are getting ready in the morning, going on a walk, or driving in your car, music can calm your brain and improve your mental state.
According to Hopkins Medicine, music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep, mood, mental alertness, and memory. In some cases, listening to a certain tune can bring back specific memories or moments connected to nostalgia. A song that was playing on a first date or during a winning sports game can take you back in time to relive the thought in your mind. Even teachers use the method of music to help students remember certain formulas or pieces of important information. Occasionally, teachers will sing little jingles. For example, in Honors Biology with Ms. Nign, she will yell CHINOPS in an odd, high-pitched voice. Or “A little organ in a cell is an organelle”. These sayings help students to remember details in the class that are important for tests and quizzes.
While both upbeat and calm music can have many beneficial factors, some music can have the opposite effect. Some music with deep meanings and slow, sorrowful sounds can do the complete opposite to your brain. Sad music can deepen feelings of depression and uneasiness. Some may argue that listening to sad music while depressed might help bring balance since it makes you feel a sense of connection and understanding to the artist. Because all of our brains function differently, there is no telling of what music can influence your brain.
In DHS, there is often music playing. On a Thursday or Friday, music can be heard over the speakers between classes, and most teachers opt to play music during class. For example, Mrs. Hanenkrat, a Dover High School art teacher, voiced,”music most definitely improves students’ moods. That’s the exact reason I play music so often in my class. When things are moving slowly, I can play a more upbeat song and spark their creativity. It helps to motivate and inspire them. Music can also help unify students by letting them find others who share the same music tastes and bond.” Music can impact a student’s brain to help them concentrate and even challenge them to think creatively. During a stressful day, simply playing a song can calm and relax you.
Music is a great and quick way to boost your mood, reduce stress, and evoke creativity. Music can bring back memories and feelings or nostalgia, and even help to remember important details and information. Music can be used as a tool to help concentration and studying. There are so many different genres and styles of music to choose from and listen to.
