How did Lin-Manuel Miranda come into fame? How did a young boy grow into such a musical legend? He worked on multiple musicals as well as movie soundtracks for all ages. His most famous works include Hamilton, In The Heights, the soundtrack for Moana, and the soundtrack for Encanto. However, the question remains: how did he rise to fame?
Growing up:
On January 16, 1980, Lin was born in Inwood, a part of a Hispanic neighborhood in Manhattan, New York, where he grew up. His parents were both from Puerto Rico; his mother immigrated as a child, while his father immigrated as a young adult. Once he was seven, he saw his first ever Broadway musical, Les Misérables, which left a huge impact on what he wanted to do in the future. In high school, he was involved in the drama program, having big roles in a few different productions. Once he graduated, he went on to study theatre at Wesleyan University. His first-ever draft of In The Heights was written. This musical held the essence of Lin’s neighborhood growing up. However, it was set in Washington Heights, which is up north from where Lin was raised.
After College
Once Lin graduated, he went on to begin an acting career in which he appeared in a few productions. He was also involved in an improv hip-hop group, Freestyle Love Supreme, and performed at multiple festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He also continued to develop In The Heights with the help of another Wesleyan graduate named Thomas Kail. In 2007, In the Heights opened Off-Broadway, New York’s alternative to Broadway, and it ran until July 2007. Lin portrayed the main role, and the musical won two Desk awards. When it was first aired on Broadway in March of 2008, it won four Tony Awards: one for best musical and the others for best original score. The show was also nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for drama. The original recording cast won the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
Where He is Now
Lin went on to write plenty more music and shows. He’s also been in movies, done voice acting, and even helped with Disney projects. This shows how talented he really is and has led to where he is today.
