The Hierarchy of Music

Let’s be honest, you don’t need all of this newfangled technology. Sure, you can carry your phone around and listen to tunes, but what happens when you don’t have WiFi or cellular data? That’s right, you have to sit there, not listen to music, and not have any fun. However, do you know what doesn’t need an internet connection to play music? That’s right, a CD player! You can have hundreds of songs on one disc, and you don’t even need an account or an internet connection. No annoying terms of use or license agreements you have to agree to, but let’s be honest who actually reads those things. What is the biggest advantage of a Compact Disc you ask? NO ADVERTISEMENTS! You just listen to the music you want, nothing more nothing less. No annoying interruptions for announcing products and services you’re never going to use, or that you already know of and use. That goes without mentioning the cool art on the case and disc. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, and a song is worth a couple hundred words. Therefore, this art is worth a few extra songs. You can listen in the car, at home, on the street, anywhere and everywhere. Just a side note, discs are much better self-defense weapons than a phone that shatters on impact.
Do you want to know what is even better than a CD? You guessed it, the cassette tape. Unlike the CD, a cassette’s music can’t be interrupted by micro-scratches and individual particles of dust. These things seem indestructible when compared to phone screens and CD’s. Also, there is no better place to store your mixtape than on an actual tape.
However, there are mediums for music better than the cassette tape. What is that medium you ask? That’s right, the radio. Tons of stations playing tons of different music for your pleasure. Whatever you like, radios got it. The radio also basically has podcasts in the form of talk shows. Radio reaches you pretty much wherever you are, giving you constant music. Let’s be honest, the radio is what accompanies us on long car rides and every day trips to school or work.
But, do you want to know what is even better than the radio? That’s right, the phonograph. Otherwise known as the record player. The upkeep needed to keep the records working encourages responsibility, and makes one appreciate music more. The occasional crackle in the music gives it more character and class, as opposed to the perfectly composed and auto-tuned music of today. Seriously, with today’s technology, you could make a drunken sailor sound good. Records, on the other hand, always sound good because the only music on them are the classics. Only the memorable bands and songs have managed to make their way on to a record. However, do you want evidence that records are the best medium for music, according to science? Well, why else would we have sent a golden record into space with the Voyager for aliens to find? Obviously because we knew that records represent music the best, and are the best medium for it. Come on, if records are good enough for aliens, then they are too good for us.
