Mueller Report: The Battle Continues
May 17, 2019
Robert Mueller’s investigation contains no evidence of collusion in the 2016 election; however, some believe that the Mueller report reveals Trump’s acts of obstruction. Federal obstruction is a three-part crime– including an act of obstruction, a connection between the obstructive act and an official proceeding, and corrupt intent. In other words, Trump is believed to have allegedly interfered with the Mueller investigation. Those who believe that Trump has interfered point to events to support this. Firstly, National Security adviser Michael Flynn lied to the FBI and administration officials, and after the White House was notified of this, Trump seemed angry at Flynn. However, a day later Trump had a dinner with the then-FBI director James Comey, demanding “loyalty” from him. Trump also had a private conversation with Comey in which he shielded Flynn from a FBI investigation. Also, upon hearing of Robert Mueller’s investigation, Trump repeatedly asked then-White House counsel Don McGahn to fire Mueller, but McGahn refused. Then, Trump asked McGahn many times to lie and deny that Trump asked him to fire Mueller. Additionally, Trump has asked that the special counsel investigate Hillary Clinton instead of himself. Ultimately, Trump has not been charged with obstruction, but the report neither convicts nor exonerates him.
