Every year, a big tennis tournament takes place in Melbourne, Australia. It’s widely known as The Australian Open. The Australian Open is held between January seventh through the twenty-eighth. It is a big tournament where players from all over the world come to play in it. Last year’s championship winner Novak Djokovic took the win over Stefanos Tsitsipas. This year, however, Sinner ended Novak Djokoivc’s 33-math Australian Open winning streak. He took the world’s number 1 player out of one of the biggest tournaments worldwide in the semi-final.
Jannik Sinner
This year’s champion finalist, Jannik Sinner, played Daniil Medvedev in the final. Jannik Sinner is an Italian professional tennis player. Sinner is ranked 4th by the Association of Tennis Professionals also known as “ATP.” He is the highest-ranked Italian male tennis player, and he won this year’s Australian Open against Daniil Medvedev. Sinner now has won 1 Grand slam in singles (A.O.). He started playing tennis when he was just seven years old because his dad really enjoyed the sport. In the off-season Sinner loves to ski and even in his younger years was a champion skier in Italy.
As many tennis players have a favorite shot in tennis, Sinner’s favorite is his backhand. One important quality Sinner has is being calm under pressure. Mistakes are a given in tennis, but a major thing in tennis is staying calm. He demonstrates this during the first two sets of the match. Even though he lost them, he continued to stay patient and wait for an opening. Once he found that opening, he took the opportunity to change the pace of the match. By taking the chance to dictate how he wanted the points to go, it gave him access to have more control over the games. Once Sinner started turning the match around, he gained the confidence in his shots to come back and have a chance at winning.
Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev is a Russian professional tennis player. He is ranked 3rd in the world by ATP. Medvedev has won 20 ATP Tour singles titles, including the 2021 US Open and 2020 ATP Finals. He has also won 1 grand slam and his favorite shot is returning of serves. He played a good match against Sinner; however, at the end of that day, Sinner was more patient and the better player for that match.
The final match between Sinner and Medvedev lasted 3 hours and 44 minutes. The final score was 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Sinner had lost the first 2 sets 3-6, 3-6. Throughout the first two sets, Medvedev moved the ball greatly and approached the net multiple times and Sinner couldn’t quite find an opening to put balls away. At the end of the second set on the changeover, Sinner made a huge comeback. He won the next three straight sets to win his first Grand Slam title win. When interviewed the morning after the winning match he stated, “There is still a lot of work to do, but I will enjoy my process and then we’ll see what I can achieve in the future.” Jannik Sinner made a huge achievement, and I think we will see more of him in the future.
