On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, tragedy struck Kansas City due to a shooting outside of the Kansas City Union Station following the Super Bowl victory parade. The celebration that came with the Kansas City Chiefs winning the big game just a few days before was brought to a halt. It was said by the police that the shooting was caused by a dispute and the gunmen were taken into custody and later charged with murder.
It is unclear what the dispute was about or what caused it, but what they do know is that 25 people were injured, half of them being under the age of 15. The only fatality was a 43-year-old woman named Elizabeth Galvan, a local Kansas City radio host and dedicated Chiefs fan. Her death reached the attention of Taylor Swift, who donated $100,000 to Galvan’s family, with a note that read “Sending my deepest sympathies and condolences in the wake of your loss.”
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife even visited and offered support to victims in the hospital. The family that the Mahomes visited said “In a time where they are traumatized, saddened, and worried, having a surprise appearance from Patrick and Brittany Mahomes brought the first smile to their faces since tragedy struck. Even though they will be wearing casts for several months they are excited to show loved ones that Patrick signed their cast.”
The Chiefs and NFL had both made statements to raise awareness of the devastating tragedy and have thanked the enforcement officers and first responders who were able to assist. The Chief’s statement read “We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City. We are in close communication with the Mayor’s office as well as the Kansas City Police Department. At this time, we have confirmed that all of our players, coaches, staff, and their families are safe and accounted for. We thank the local law enforcement officers and first responders who were on-scene to assist.” The NFL made a similar statement that said “We are deeply saddened by the senseless shooting that occurred today near the end of the rally in Kansas City for the Chiefs. Our thoughts are with the victims and everyone affected. We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency personnel.” Hopefully, everyone affected by this terrible event is able to make a fast recovery and can feel the support from everyone a
