Recently on New Year’s Eve, the ball dropped twice. Although lots of people did not know this, it is true. This once-in-a-lifetime event is just one extra part of how we kicked off the start of a new year; so now let’s make it count and make this year a great one.
Now that you know that the ball dropped twice, let’s talk about why. Well, the ball dropped twice to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. That’s right, “The Declaration of Independence was signed 250 years ago”, as of January 1st 2026. This is a monumental milestone for history that will live on forever because the U.S is still thriving after being around for 250 years. The thing that used to be an idea that became a reality is still living on each day and providing a place for people to live. This is truly something that will go down in U.S history forever.
Next, this New Year’s was the first year for this ball to be dropped. The new ball weighs 12,350 pounds and has 5,280 LED Waterford Crystal circles on it. This year was the first year ever in history that the ball dropped twice on New Year’s. The ball dropped for the second time 4 minutes after the ball dropped the first time at midnight. Another fun fact too is that all the confetti thrown on New Year’s is hand-thrown by people. The confetti’s total weight this year was 3,000 pounds. Just imagine 3,000 pounds of confetti being thrown at you from the rooftops of skyscrapers in NYC.
Some other facts that deal with New Year’s celebrations are that some people ring in the new year by dropping other objects. Such as in “Mobile, Alabama”, where they celebrate the new year by dropping a giant Moon Pie. The reason they do so is that it is a traditional celebratory food in “Mobile, Alabama”, to remember the Apollo 11 moon walk. So now, on every “New Year’s Eve at midnight”, they drop a 12-foot-tall mechanical Moon Pie that weighs 600 pounds. Also, in “Boise, Idaho”, they drop a giant potato to celebrate New Year’s, and in “Indianapolis, Indiana”, they used to drop an Indy Car on New Year’s, representing their Indy 500.
Finally, some more things people drop to celebrate New Year’s are a giant marshmallow peep in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. This peep weighs 400 pounds and is 4 feet 9 inches tall. Another weird object that is dropped for New Year’s is a giant ball of popcorn in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Yes, it is really made out of popcorn… get your buckets ready! Then, in “Nashville, Tennessee”, they drop a music note. Also, in “Parma,Ohio”, they drop a giant Pierogi.
In conclusion, the U.S has kicked off the New Year right by celebrating America’s 250th birthday by dropping the ball twice on January 1st 2026, for the first time ever. As well as a lot of other people by dropping their very unique and unusual versions of the NYC Ball drop to kick off their new year. Happy 2026.
