The Ohio Music Education Association Large Group Adjudicated Band Event is an important experience for many school bands. It gives students a chance to perform for judges and show all the hard work they have put into practicing throughout the year as well as giving feedback for growth. When our band went to perform at Lake High School, it was an experience that I will always remember. From the moment we arrived, everything about the event felt exciting and inspiring. Being surrounded by other bands who loved music as much as we did made the whole night feel special.
One of the first things I noticed when we arrived was how amazing the Lake High School building was. The school was very large and looked really nice both inside and out. The hallways were wide and clean, and everything seemed very organized for the event. There were signs showing bands where to go, and volunteers helping everyone stay on schedule. It was clear that the school had prepared a lot for the event, and it helped everything run smoothly. Walking through such a nice building made the event feel important and professional, almost like we were musicians getting ready for a big performance.
Another thing that made the experience great was how supportive all the other bands were. When we were waiting in the cafeteria, students from different schools were sitting together, talking, and encouraging each other. Instead of acting competitive, everyone was being really kind and respectful. Some people would ask other bands how their performance went, and others would wish them good luck before they went to perform. It felt more like a big community of musicians rather than a competition. Seeing everyone be so friendly made the environment feel welcoming and positive.
The cafeteria was actually one of the places where you could really see the support between bands. While groups were waiting for their turn or relaxing after performing, students would say nice things about each other. Even if bands came from different schools, everyone understood how much work it takes to prepare music for an event like this. Because of that, people respected each other and celebrated the effort that every band put into their performance. It made the whole experience much less stressful and a lot more enjoyable.
The performances from both the Symphonic Band and the Concert Band were also amazing. Both groups had clearly worked very hard to prepare their music for the event. The Symphonic Band played with a lot of power and confidence. Their sound was strong and balanced, and you could tell they understood the music they were performing. The Concert Band also did an incredible job. Their performance showed great teamwork and focus. Everyone listened carefully to each other, which helped the music come together really well. During both performances, you could tell that the musicians had practiced a lot and really cared about doing their best.
Watching and listening to both bands made me realize how much everyone has grown as musicians. At the beginning of the year, some of the music seemed really difficult. Many students were still working on improving their technique, tone, and rhythm. But over time, through practice and rehearsals, the bands improved a lot. By the time we performed at the OMEA event, the difference was clear. The music sounded stronger, more confident, and more expressive. Both bands got the highest rating of one. Which is something to be proud of. It showed that hard work really does pay off.
I am very proud of both the Symphonic Band and the Concert Band for everything they accomplished. Preparing for an event like this takes a lot of time and dedication. Students have to practice during class, at home, and sometimes even after school. Everyone also has to work together and listen to each other to create as good of a sound as possible for such large groups; seeing the bands perform so well made all the effort worth it.
Overall, the OMEA Large Group Band Event was a wonderful experience. The amazing building at Lake High School, the supportive attitude of the other bands, and the incredible performances from both the Symphonic and Concert Bands all made the day unforgettable. Most importantly, the event showed how much the musicians had grown throughout the year. It was a moment where all the hard work paid off, and it made me feel proud to be part of such a dedicated group of musicians.
