3 days, 2 days, 1 day, are you ready for spring break? I know I was, but then I was talking to some of my friends who attend different schools like Indian Valley and other private schools, and they told me that they don’t get a full traditional week of Spring Break. Instead, they get Good Friday and the day after Easter off. I started to think, what if Dover didn’t have a Spring Break anymore? I mean, would it be so bad if we didn’t have a Spring Break? There is always the possibility that Spring Break could be taken away because of too many snow days, but they typically schedule more hours than needed so that we don’t have to lose our Spring Break. When Spring Breaks are allowed, students get to sleep in, but some often feel stressed about getting prepared for their EOC’s.
Spring Break is important to many students because they get to sleep in and feel more rejuvenated for the remainder of the school year and for their EOC’s. Students also get a chance to hang out with friends outside of school for a longer time period and can do whatever they want; they can go shopping, watch a movie, or just hang out. It can be whatever they want with minimal interruptions. Students also get a chance for their brains to take a break from school, but when they return, they have to cram for their EOC’s the following week.
I asked freshman Presley Such her favorite thing about Spring Break, and she said, “I enjoy giving my brain a break.”
I then asked Senior, Kara Lint her favorite thing about Spring Break, and she said, “I got to go to Ohio University to watch softball and then got to go to Pennsylvania to watch my neighbor play softball.”
I finally asked freshman Abby Lint her favorite thing about Spring Break, and she said: “I got to play softball with my friends and I had fun hanging out with them.”
The only downside that I can really think of to having a Spring Break is that there are still sports that week, which, if you’re hanging out with friends, can put a pause in your day.
There are many benefits to having a spring break, and I think that Dover should continue to have a spring break because of the many positive outcomes, such as ensuring students are ready for the remainder of the year and for their final EOC exams. Along with all of the end of the year activities coming up for juniors and seniors alone. There are college visits they can attend, prom, and for seniors, there is graduation. All of which are big milestones for which they want to be well-rested.
