On a dreary, rainy night, Daniel was on his way back home from his job at the construction site. He was driving on the country road back to town. Every day when work was finished, he would pass over the pine bridge to make it to town. Inside his warm, comfortable black pickup truck, Daniel was eating a sandwich leftover from his lunch while listening to the radio. That’s when he suddenly had to slam on the brakes, as he saw a girl wearing a blush pink dress. She was drenched from the rain while walking on the road. Daniel anxiously got out of the truck and walked to the front to see if she was okay.
Daniel asked the girl if she wanted a ride home as it was raining. She had accepted his kind offer and then they were on the road again. Her name was Audrey. Audrey is a senior in high school and was just at her school’s prom. She was really excited for prom as it was what she had been looking forward to for months in advance. Her mom and dad had helped her get together for prom earlier that day. Her mom helped her with her hair and makeup and her dad treated them all to a very nice dinner. While Audrey was at prom, she had gotten to dance with the man of her dreams during a slow dance. Audrey had fallen in love with a guy whose name was Jeffery. She thought it was meant to be. That was until he turned around and started to dance with another girl. The scene that unfolded right in front of Audrey shattered her. She broke down and walked out of prom in tears. Audrey walked home in the cold rain to comfort her from the heart break. It started pouring down rain not long after she had left prom. She had calmed down by the time they were in town and driving toward her house.
Right as Daniel had pulled just to the entrance to the driveway of her home, he saw the big house with bright yellow lights all lit from the windows. She must be from a rich family having such a nice house.
He sat and watched her walk up to the porch and went inside. After making sure that she was inside, Daniel went home. When he arrived at his driveway, he looked over and saw that Audrey had accidentally forgotten her necklace in the cupholder. Daniel figured he would give the necklace back to Audrey tomorrow in daylight.
The next day, Daniel pulled up into the driveway of Audrey’s house. He walked up the fancy walkway to the door and knocked a few times on the door. An elderly lady opened the door and greeted him. He showed her the necklace and said he wanted to return it. She looked at the necklace in awe and wondered where Daniel had found it. He told her that he brought Audrey home last night, and she forgot it in his truck. The old lady gave him a puzzled look. Daniel had left there that day with shivers crawling down his spine. The old lady told Daniel that her daughter had been hit and killed by a truck on the Pine Bridge on a stormy night over fifty-five years ago. It was her prom night, but she never made it back home.
